Why publishing matters more than streams
Two royalties come out of every song, and most independent artists only ever collect one. The recording earns from streams. The song itself earns separately, every time it is played on radio, streamed, performed live, placed in a film, a series, an advert or a church service. That second stream of income is often the steadier one, and it is the part that goes unclaimed because nobody registered the work properly.
